Equity and Inclusion Learning Community Meeting

Join your colleagues for the next Equity and Inclusion Learning Community Meeting at the Marian Cheek Jackson Center in Chapel Hill.

The Jackson Center is a hub of creative action dedicated to preserving the future of historically Black neighborhoods in Chapel Hill. Located in the heart of the Northside community, Center staff work in collaboration with Northside neighbors and friends to respect and to serve histories that, even as they are told, make new history out of Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, civil rights struggle, and desegregation. Today Northside and Pine Knolls are among the most racially, ethnically, and economically diverse neighborhoods in the region.

We'll learn about their work and then gather together for lunch.

Emerging Leaders Learning Community Meeting

Career development in philanthropy can look, well, a bit different than it does in other sectors. What steps can you take to grow in your current role and think about your next steps for career advancement? Join the NCNG Emerging Leaders Learning Community to talk about this (and more) with Marirose Steigerwald, Director of Operations for the N.C. Community Foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2016, she was a partner in a consulting firm specializing in search and leadership development, and she has served in leadership roles in both large and small public and privately held companies. Of course, this will also be a great opportunity to connect with your peers around the state. Register today!

Grantmakers Education Summit

NCNG is pleased to present the 2018 Grantmakers Education Summit! The agenda will be announced soon, register today to save your spot!

We hope you will join us and your fellow funders Nov. 29-30 in Chapel Hill to dive into issues affecting student outcomes along the education continuum.

On tap for the event is exploring how an accurate Census count affects school funding in North Carolina, hearing from education practitioners about challenges they face on the front lines, learning more about how to engage with policymakers, and plenty of time to network with your peers from across the state.

There is no charge for this event, and overnight accommodations are provided. All NCNG members whose work intersects with positive outcomes for children are welcome to attend. However, space is limited for this event, so reserve a spot soon. If you have questions or need additional information, contact Sarah Mann Willcox at NCNG.

Participation, Power and Philanthropy: Putting Nonprofits and Communities in the Driver’s Seat

As grantmakers, our desire to have a positive impact on the communities we serve fuels our work. In order to create the greatest impact, we must work side by side with nonprofits and communities to solve problems and determine the most effective path forward. But what does it look like to have nonprofits and communities drive our work? How much participation is required to center our work on what the community tells us it needs? How can we be advocates for this approach to philanthropy? This full day workshop will answer these questions.

Through individual reflection, group activities, peer coaching and discussion, this hands-on workshop will help you assess how nonprofits and communities currently participate in your work. We will discuss the importance of examining participation through diversity, equity and inclusion lenses, and you will leave with tools to help your organization plan for three important “w’s” of participation: when participation is important, who should participate and what participation could look like. We will end our day with dedicated time to reflect on the role you can play in creating opportunities for participation moving forward.

We'll tackle the essentials of participation, helping you to:

  • Gain an understanding of why participation is a critical component of all of the work that you do

  • Assess how diversity, equity and inclusion might influence participation

  • Use different tools, resources and frameworks to foster greater participation with nonprofits and communities

  • Develop a plan to help your organization with its participation efforts

Don’t miss the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and spend time thinking about this critical issue.
