Chief Operating Officer
The Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1978 to build a permanent pool of charitable capital for the 18 counties of Western North Carolina. The Foundation works with individuals, families and corporations to create and manage charitable funds and make grants to nonprofits or public agencies in our region.
II. Position Description
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will report to the President and be a member of the Foundation’s management team. The COO will focus on the Foundation’s overall operations with an emphasis on the integration of all departments and functions to successfully and efficiently execute the Foundation’s strategies.
Oversee specific operations of the Foundation and work closely with the President to keep her/him fully informed of significant issues;
Lead the Foundation’s pursuit of organizational effectiveness, including compliance with laws, regulations and National Standards for US Community Foundations;
Lead the Foundation in managing aspects of human resources, including By-laws, personnel policies and procedures, employee benefits programs and compensation programs;
Oversee the Foundation’s Information Technology staff and operations, including implementation of best practices and protocols for the management of Foundation databases, IT security and IT audit;
Serve as lead on various fund fiduciary stewardship matters, estate settlements, matters referred to outside counsel, vendor contracts, condo association matters, and CFWNC’s WNC Real Estate Foundation.

- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree required
- Accounting or Finance experience preferred
- Desire to work in a team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working with high net worth individuals
- As with all CFWNC staff, assume responsibilities necessary to meet CFWNC’s strategic goals
Ability to lift objects of a minimum of 15 pounds in weight. Ability to drive an automobile for up to three consecutive hours at a time. Job duties require approximately 85% sitting/typing, and 15% standing/walking. Physical requirements will vary depending upon the specific duties to be accomplished.
Compensation will be commensurate with skill level and experience with an annual performance and salary review. Foundation employees participate in a Paid Time Off accrual system initially equivalent to 25 days off per year representing vacation and sick time, plus seven additional paid holidays. CFWNC offers participation in group health, dental, vision and retirement plans to eligible employees. All CFWNC employees are subject to a criminal background check.
