The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation seeks a visionary, strategic professional with proven management and leadership expertise, philanthropic knowledge and acumen, an understanding of how social determinants of health impact healthcare, and a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Job description:

The President of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC Foundation is responsible for the leadership of an independent, corporate foundation that has evolved into a leading statewide health funder and thought partner in philanthropy. The President possesses outstanding interpersonal skills; is comfortable working with people of wide-ranging backgrounds; a successful communicator who assesses and responds to the needs of the community, the Board and staff, and other key stakeholders; someone who keeps a focus on the long-term objectives of the organization while balancing strategic and tactical responsibilities; and represents the Foundation with multiple constituencies in North Carolina and nationally.
Major Responsibilities

  1. Ensures the strategic development and implementation of the Foundation mission, bringing clarity, vision, and values to enhance the impact and outcomes on health in North Carolina.

  2. Designs, implements and monitors statewide health initiatives to build capacity within community centered health initiatives at the local level.

  3. Directs the development, implementation, and assessment of business planning, grant making strategies, and evaluation frameworks to achieve targeted, result-oriented outcomes.

  4. Identifies and monitors trends and emerging issues related to communities, health, equity, leadership, nonprofits, philanthropy, and grant making that move beyond healthcare access to health care systems transformation and systems change.

  5. Works collaboratively with the Board of Directors to support a strong model of governance and engages with the board as appropriate on issues related to strategy, values, reputation, communications, community impact, and state or national collaborations.

  6. Mentors, coaches, counsels, and communicates with staff to position them for growth as incumbents or in subsequent higher-level assignments.Leverages the strengths and promotes the talents and evolution of the staff with a commitment to the team culture.

  7. Ensures proper research of emerging philanthropic and community issues and develops, recommends, and sets priorities that respond to these issues.

  8. Provides leadership, direction, and management to the Foundation including the operations of fiscal, administrative, and legal oversight.

  9. Oversees staff focusing on programs, policies, and grant making procedures in a manner that fulfills the mission of the Foundation and is in accordance with all pertinent legal and regulatory requirements.

  10. Develops and maintains strong, positive working relationships with partner/grantee organizations, key leadership within Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, state and national peers within the philanthropic sector, membership organizations, and nonprofit leaders throughout North Carolina.

  11. Leads Foundation engagement in multisector collaborations, statewide and national organizations, thought partners, coalitions, task forces, and committees, as appropriate.

  12. Serves as the chief spokesperson for the Foundation and a voice of the organization on social media.

Hiring Requirements and Attributes

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field required; advanced degree a plus.

  • Significant senior-level or executive experience in philanthropy, foundation or health-related field, with at least 10 years of leadership experience.

  • Passion, vision, inspiration and enthusiasm for the health and wellness of the citizens of North Carolina.

  • An understanding of the complex health inequity and disparities landscape in North Carolina including inter-relationships among communities, health plans, providers of medical services, Medicaid and uninsured, employers, community clinics, other health care organizations, philanthropy, social services, and the public sector, among others.

  • Broad knowledge of public health policies, trends and a deep understanding of social determinants of health, systems change, philanthropy, and equity are strongly preferred.

  • Relationship builder with the various constituencies including the Board, the staff, local and federal governments, nonprofit agencies, public health interests, advocacy groups, health care providers, and other funders.

  • Helps solidify the Foundation’s point of view and complementary communications approach.

  • Strengthens synergy between the Foundation and internal stakeholders across Blue Cross NC.

  • Ability to transform influential connections into action.

  • Advocate for policy and systems change and an innovative risk taker.

  • Embraces equity, diversity and inclusion and brings

  • Exceptional and intelligent listening skills.

  • Excellent leadership, management, and people-building skills including the ability to establish an inclusive team environment that supports the vision for the goals and direction of the Foundation.

  • Appreciation and capitalization of the staff’s skills and talents.

  • Ability to determine the information necessary to strategically assess, grant-making/investment opportunities combined with the ability to evaluate and recommend/implement an optimal plan of action.

  • Creates a culture of disruptive innovation where staff, and by extension grantees, can be measured risk takers who are comfortable with experimentation.

  • Provides the visionary leadership required to develop an agenda that addresses short- and long-term societal issues relevant to the Foundation's defined mission.

  • Serves as a role model for, and ensures that staff and Board of Directors meet, high ethical standards of conduct and fiduciary duty.

  • Honesty with unquestionable integrity and moral character.

  • Embraces adaptive leadership principles to drive implementation of organizational values and goals.

Salary:  $250,000,  Commensurate with experience.  Excellent Benefits.
