SECU Foundation Provides Disaster Relief Grant to Feeding the Carolinas Food Bank

9/18/2018

Raleigh, N.C. – In response to the catastrophic flooding thousands of North Carolinians are experiencing from Hurricane Florence, the member-funded SECU Foundation is announcing a grant of $1 million to Feeding the Carolinas (formerly the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks) to assist victims in the counties directly impacted by the storm. This grant will support the food banks that directly serve residents in areas where emergency assistance is greatly needed, helping to provide water, food, cleaning supplies, and other essentials.

“Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina with a vengeance and its impact will be long-lasting, especially in our southeastern coastal cities and inland towns,” said Cynthia Jolly, SECU Foundation Board Chair. “Many of our friends, families, and neighbors had to leave their homes and seek shelter just two years after the tremendous flooding and damage in our state from Hurricane Matthew. We know that food and supplies are needed quickly, which is why SECU Foundation has reacted immediately with funding to assist Feeding the Carolinas with delivering essential items to those hard-hit areas.”

Mike Darrow, Executive Director of Feeding the Carolinas remarked, “We are thrilled that SECU Foundation is once again joining Feeding the Carolinas in support of our disaster recovery efforts. This $1 million grant will make a significant impact in our food banks’ efforts to provide badly needed food and supplies to our friends and neighbors in North Carolina that have been affected by Florence. We look forward to our continued partnership with SECU Foundation.”

“State Employees’ Credit Union is rooted in North Carolina – it’s home for us and the members we serve in communities all across the state. There are many challenges ahead for our fellow citizens and our members and we are here to help,” commented Mike Lord, President and CEO of State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU). “The SECU Foundation grant to Feeding the Carolinas is an excellent way to provide support, and we encourage other organizations to help as well. The needs are significant and will be for quite some time. Our member-funded Foundation is making a difference in people’s lives, which is what SECU tries to do every day in serving our members.”
