Position Summary:
The Accountant ensures the accuracy and efficiency of internal and external financial reporting, by aligning strong internal controls, technology and processes, with donor expectations. The Accountant is responsible for disbursement and trust fund accounting, general ledger processing and reconciliations, maintenance of financial files and monthly fund analysis and reporting.  Integral to the Accountant’s work is the effective use of information systems, while maintaining adherence to an effective internal control system.  The position requires a customer service focus to meet the needs of internal colleagues and external stakeholders and creates, builds, and strengthens relationships with individuals, agencies, and businesses in the community as it relates to the Finance Department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
A.  Finance and Accounting
  • Ensures timely, accurate transfer of data from sub ledgers (including contributions, credit cards, grants, interfund transfers) to general ledger
  • Serves as lead for trust funds’ activity, accounting and reconciliations; gathers and prepares information needed for trust funds’ annual tax return preparation and prepares returns as requested.
  • Ensures accurate, efficient processing of all Foundation disbursements (weekly), including recording, payment, database maintenance, related tax coding and filings and maintenance of all financial files
  • Process tax filings: 1099, 1096, semi-annual sales tax refund
  • Prepares general ledger reconciliations, including cash accounts, prepaids, sales tax refunds, grants
  • Address or coordinate responses to inquiries from donors regarding funds;   perform analyses and/or research as needed
  • Maintain Fixed Asset ledger and prepare related journal entries.
  • Provides assistance with investment accounts as needed
  • Prepares, analyzes and distributes periodic reports on charitable and special purpose funds
  • Maintains vendor database, preventing duplicate vendors and payment and maximizes utilization of Financial Edge and Granted Edge as relates to disbursements
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for interface between Granted Edge and Financial Edge software
  • Researches, recommends and implements process improvements to work
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned
  • Manage ETWI processing by working with project coordinator to process all payables and maintain budgeting worksheets. 
B.  Provision of Administrative and Logistical Support
  • Serves as member of the Foundation’s Finance Team and interdepartmental teams to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Foundation
  • Anticipates questions relating to accounting work and proactively communicates; responds promptly and thoroughly to internal and fundholders’ inquiries
  • Coordinates requests related to annual audit and periodic surveys and assists with audit as requested.
  • Work with all departments to ensure financial reporting needs are met
  • Participate in interdepartment teams/meetings as appropriate, (e.g., database management team, project implementation, technology), to develop and maintain effective and efficient processes and procedures
  • Organize, maintain and destroy accounting files and documentation, in accordance with retention policy
  • Provide any needed special reporting on strategic initiatives
  • Serve as backup to Accountant II position
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent subject area
  • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior non-profit finance/accounting experience
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft products
  • Effective organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities/tasks and work accurately in a fast-paced environment 
  • Adherence to details, deadlines and accuracy
  • Commitment to training in both areas of soft skills and technical skills to maintain current skills and knowledge
  • Willingness to learn and assume more responsibility
  • Creativity and self initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Ability to gain the confidence and respect of donors and professional advisors as well as community foundation colleagues 
  • Ability to work effectively one-on-one as well as make effective formal presentations
  • CPA or CMA
  • Experience with integrated databases and system conversions helpful
  • A broad and diverse knowledge of community issues and demographics with a strong individual network
  • Working knowledge of community foundations and an understanding of charitable giving opportunities and strategies
  • Experience with Blackbaud products (Financial Edge and Raisers Edge) and Granted Edge
  • Fund accounting experience
  • General understanding of investments
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations and an understanding of charitable giving opportunities and strategies
