THE ROLE
The Leverage Officer is a vital team member and will perform various project management and strategy activities, including building and maintaining relationships with community-based organizations (CBOs) working across Western North Carolina. These activities primarily generate opportunities to garner grant funding from outside the region to strengthen and support CBOs, enabling them to serve the community better. The Leverage Officer will build relationships that allow them to be a trusted and dependable thought partner across the Community Investment Team and with CBOs to deepen their focus on grant opportunities outside the region.
Reporting to the Vice President (VP) of Community Equity, the successful candidate will be passionate about equity and resource development, have a track record of measurable results, and be flexible, adaptive, and energized in a deadline-driven work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES
INITIATIVE LEADERSHIP & STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT
- In collaboration with internal stakeholders, assist CBOs in identifying funding opportunities that align with their missions, maintaining an effective cadre of grant writers and consultants to bolster successful grant applications for our partners, evaluate the effectiveness of efforts, and make recommendations to the Vice President, Community Equity, to ensure enhanced success, adequate resources, and an ever-present focus on advancing equity.
- Embed equity and inclusion in all aspects of your work, considering all stakeholders' diverse needs and perspectives, promoting fair practices, and contributing to a workplace culture that values and respects diversity. Advocate for equitable outcomes and ensure that all actions and decisions reflect our commitment to equity.
- Identify and disseminate emerging grant opportunities in the sector with Dogwood’s strategically aligned partners.
- Regularly engage colleagues, consultants, and grant writers in exploring new funding opportunities for our partners, focusing on opportunities for CBOs that serve historically marginalized populations.
- Identify CBOs with solid potential for partnership; build relationships and recommend grantee partners for further engagement and capacity building.
- Participate regularly as a key Community Investment team member in staff meetings to communicate openly about our strategies and efforts.
EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT
- Deepen alliances with state and federal-level funding partners, government administrators, local, state, and federal agencies, charitable organizations, economic developers, and housing agencies to identify and anticipate potential funding opportunities that would benefit WNC CBOs.
- Provide regular report-outs to Dogwood Community Investment staff, focusing on opportunities to increase Dogwood grantee partners’ access to upcoming state, federal, and private foundation funding.
- Serve as a partner and point of contact for grantees and other collaborators in pursuing opportunities for outside grant funding.
- Anticipate, analyze, and quantify the needs of CBOs and proactively seek opportunities that leverage existing community strengths and assets to leverage outside grant funding successfully.
- Create an environment of transparency, collaboration, and community focus.
- Represent Dogwood to a diverse array of partners including grantees, community leaders, business leaders, government officials, affinity groups, and collaborators in the region.
- Educate community and statewide leaders about Dogwood’s mission, programs, and goals.
- As appropriate, convene grantees and others in the field to advance collective action, networking, and learning opportunities for aligned exempt entities to increase their capacity as our most vital partners.
- Serve as a thought partner and remain well informed of current research, activities, and trends in the issues aligned exempt entities address.
GRANTS & COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
- Leverage public and private funding streams to optimize investments and impact of initiatives that address health equity and the social determinants of health.
- Review and analyze grantmaking investments to ensure legal/regulatory compliance.
- Evaluate grant and community investment proposals and develop funding recommendations.
- Prepare strategy memos, briefs, reports, and presentations in various formats to engage a broad range of constituents (e.g., board members, community leaders, grantees, and allied funders).
- Review statements of work (SOW).
- Support the development and implementation of initiative evaluation plans to track the work's impact and allow for continuous learning.
- Prepare and contribute to written materials, including grant recommendations and context papers, that communicate the alignment of grantee activities with portfolio goals and strategies.
- Collaborate with colleagues, board, and staff to coordinate and contribute to projects and relationships, leverage community strengths, assets, and identity opportunities, and combine efforts for mutual success and integration.
- Share knowledge and insights with foundation colleagues through formal exchanges, informal conversations, and written documentation that contributes to a transparent organizational culture and mutual respect.
- Work alongside the Director of Public Policy to improve integrative efforts in realizing multiple change efforts and agents.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent years’ experience required.
- Five years of increasingly responsible experience in resource development including grant-seeking, including three years of performing increasingly responsible project/program management functions.
- Five years or more of progressively responsible roles related to resource development, portfolio management and evaluation.
- Demonstrated leadership of a transformational initiative or project with measurable impact.
- Advanced and adept experience with Microsoft Office suite; comfort in technology with the ability to learn and adopt new tools and resources as needed.
- Experience with contract and statement of work review (SOW).
- Experience in a startup environment or launching a new program, product, department, or initiative.
- Experience establishing and managing complex internal and external relationships.
- Budget management experience.
- Proven track record of developing and fostering excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders; able to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration. Proven ability to work with government and agency partners, build successful relationships with local leaders and organizations and engage people from diverse backgrounds in various settings.
