May 1, 2017, ALBEMARLE, N.C. The Stanly County Community Foundation, a regional affiliate of Foundation For The Carolinas, announced it has exceeded its fundraising goal.

The $123,000 raised will be added to a $100,000 anonymous matching gift made in memory of C.B. Crook for a total of $223,000.

Were thrilled that in the short period of time since we announced this Challenge Gift last fall that we have reached and passed our goal, said Marshall Rogers, board chairman of the SCCF. The funds raised will have a significant effect on our yearly grant making ability. Our board members really rose to the occasion with their support, as did friends and family of C.B. Crook.

Crook, former owner of Crook Motor Company, was a founding board member of SCCF and its only Emeritus member.

Crook, along with wife Betty, was active in supporting local nonprofits, particularly the Stanly County Family YMCA and the Stanly Memorial Hospital Foundation where he led major capital campaigns. After his death in May 2016, an anonymous donor stepped forward with a challenge gift to SCCF to honor his memory.

It is a testament to how much C.B. meant to so many people in this community, said Rogers. He is the reason this campaign was successful and, with the C.B. Crook Community Fund, his philanthropic legacy will continue in perpetuity.

The SCCF started in 1999 with $500,000 Duke Energy gift honoring retiring CEO William Grigg, an Albemarle native, and, later, a $40,000 gift from Uwharrie Bank. The Foundation makes yearly grants to area nonprofits including the YMCA, GHA Autism Supports, Stanly Community Christian Ministry, Homes of Hope, Bridge to Recovery, Esther House, Pfeiffer University, Stanly Community College, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, among others.

SCCFs mission is to bring together donors, community leaders and nonprofits to make positive impacts throughout Stanly County.
