Community Foundation of the Dan River Region Launches Coronavirus Relief Fund

3/30/2020

With a tremendous sense of empathy and urgency, The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has launched a Coronavirus Relief Fund. This is a critical time—for foundations, corporations, individuals and organizations to step up and combine resources to address and limit negative impacts from the current public health crisis to the people and communities of our region. The Community Foundation has committed $25,000 in seed money to establish the Fund, and requests contributions to meet immediate and ongoing needs.

The Community Foundation is grateful to partner with organizations operating on the frontlines to ensure essential human needs are met during this health crisis. Your donations will provide resources for The Community Foundation to strategically and efficiently make grants to expand the capacity of nonprofits across multiple sectors serving communities in Danville and Pittsylvania County, VA and Caswell County, NC.

Kathy Milam, Executive Director for The Community Foundation states: “While our region manages this crisis, the Foundation’s responsibility is to assist in finding local solutions. The Coronavirus Relief Fund is established so the public can give with the assurance their donations will be granted to organizations providing immediate care to our communities’ most vulnerable populations. This Fund is designed to supplement, not replace, resources already in place. The Community Foundation has designed this Fund to be flexible and responsive given the immediacy of this pandemic.”

The Community Foundation is working to identify and prioritize the most compelling areas of need. Initially, grant funding will support nonprofit organizations that provide community safety nets for crucial services in the following sectors: childcare, utilities, rent, small business, and food insecurity.

In order to move resources quickly, The Community Foundation is not hosting a formal application process. Potential frontline grantee partners will be identified and contacted. Information will be solicited on proposed projects and final awards will be recommended. Existing experience and accountability in addressing the immediate needs of the people made vulnerable by the coronavirus pandemic is essential.

Grants are limited to 501(c)(3) nonprofits, groups fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, or other charitable organizations able to receive a tax-deductible contribution, such as schools, faith-based organizations, and other public entities.

Donations of any amount are welcomed and all contributions are tax deductible.
Gifts can be made payable to “The Community Foundation” for the Coronavirus Relief Fund. Gifts may be mailed to 541 Loyal Street, Danville, VA 24541 or made online at www.cfdrr.org under the Giving tab.
