Gaston Community Foundation and First Gaston Foundation make $100,000 Contribution to Virus Relief Fund

3/31/2020

Gaston Community Foundation and the First Gaston Foundation Fund (a fund held by the Community Foundation) announce a $100,000 grant to the Gaston County Virus Relief Fund. The Gaston Community Foundation is supporting $50,000 and the First Gaston Foundation Fund is also supporting $50,000 towards the relief. "The Community Foundation is working in partnership with the United Way to provide funding to nonprofits serving on the front lines of the virus. We have dedicated staff, resources and our own funding to ensure we can help those most impacted by the virus," stated Ernest Sumner, President GCF.

Contributions for the Gaston County Virus Relief Fund continue to rise. The David Belk Cannon Foundation provided the initial $150,000 grant in support of the Fund. The City of Gastonia has also committed $50,000 to provide funding to help individuals and small business with bills related to utilities during this time.

The Partnership consisting of The Gaston Community Foundation, United Way of Gaston County, City of Gastonia, Duke Energy, and the Gaston Business Task Force, created the Gaston County Virus Relief Fund to accept and strategically disburse funds to address the COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts in Gaston County.
The Fund is providing flexible resources to organizations with deep roots in Gaston County as well as experience addressing basic needs and filling public health gaps. An application for funding is available online at www.cfgaston.org and has already received many requests. A Committee is meeting virtually each week to determine funding for the nonprofits applying. The goal is to help regional front-line nonprofit organizations quickly meet increasing demands for help.

Some proactive grants will be awarded. Other nonprofits will use the simple, expedited process to access funds with grants awarded on a rolling basis, as fundraising continues throughout the outbreak and recovery phases of the pandemic.

Members of the community who wish to support aid to those affected by COVID-19 may donate using www.HelpGaston.org . Donations may also be made through Foundation Donor Advised Funds by specifying Gaston County Virus Relief Fund.
Gaston Community Foundation works with families, businesses and nonprofits to strengthen communities through the creation of charitable funds and strategic grantmaking. A permanent charitable resource, the Foundation manages over 400 funds and has a total of over $110 million in grantmaking since its founding in 1978.
