NC Community Foundation distributes over $4 million in grants through NC Healing Communities Fund

11/10/2021
North Carolina Community Foundation launched its NC Healing Communities Fund in January 2021 to benefit nonprofit organizations suffering from the financial impacts of COVID-19. The Fund specifically focuses on supporting organizations embedded in and serving marginalized communities, including communities of color, communities of lower wealth, mostly rural communities, and where English may not be the primary language.

So far this year, the Fund has distributed 115 grants, totaling $4,250,000. Of the organizations receiving grants from the fund, 100% report COVID-19 impacts of revenue loss (74%) and/or increased demand for services (76%), and 100% primarily serve marginalized communities. In addition, 88% of them have annual operating budgets below $1 million.

The Mephibosheth Project, Inc. in Wayne County received a grant of $40,000 from the NC Healing Communities Fund.  They were not able to host their annual fundraiser for two consecutive years due to COVID-19, and Executive Director Reverend Marvin R. Alexander said,

“The award of a NC Healing Community Grant to our agency provided just what the name states, ‘healing to our community’.  Such generous support has allowed us to not only keep our doors open and our lights on, but (it) has made it possible for us to continue the much-needed community work that MPI provides.  Our mission can be very daunting at times, but with the help of the NC Community Foundation we can continue to say that the mission is possible.”

The NC Healing Communities Fund represents the collective contributions of corporations and foundations, including the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation, Duke Endowment, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, First Citizens Bank, Anonymous Trust, Jonas Foundation, Barnhill Family Foundation, Novartis Foundation, Fidelity Bank and NC Community Foundation.

Plans for the use of remaining funds will be announced in 2022.
