RiverLink Receives Community Foundation Anniversary Grant for Mud Creek Project

5/31/2022
Hendersonville, N.C., May 31, 2022 – Community Foundation of Henderson County awarded its third grant in series of special 40th Anniversary grants at Saturday morning’s Garden Jubilee Speaker Series. At the event, which was sponsored by Community Foundation, a grant totaling $28,700 was presented to nonprofit RiverLink to implement their “Connecting the Community with Mud Creek” project. RiverLink works to promote the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed as a place to live, work, and play.

“Protecting the beautiful lands and waterways of where we call home is a pillar of Community Foundation of Henderson County’s charitable work,” shared Foundation President/CEO McCray V. Benson. “For 40 years, donors have supported local conservation efforts and it is because of them that we are able to award a 40th Anniversary Grant to this special project in Hendersonville’s backyard. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that RiverLink’s project will have on Mud Creek and our community.”

RiverLink is a lead partner with the French Broad River Paddle Trail, which covers Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe and Madison counties. The nonprofit learned from supporters, stakeholders and partners that Mud Creek is underutilized as a recreational resource for residents and visitors to Henderson County which prompted the creation of their “Connecting the Community with Mud Creek” project. Community Foundation’s 40th Anniversary grant helps put the project in motion.

“With this 40th Anniversary grant funding from Community Foundation, RiverLink will steward the section of Mud Creek between Hendersonville and the confluence with the French Broad River, removing trash and select woody vegetation to allow and encourage safe travel by paddlers and anglers,” shared RiverLink’s Land Resources Manager Jack Henderson. “RiverLink enthusiastically thanks Community Foundation for their support of our work, along with that of countless other organizations working to sustain and improve Henderson County.”

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Community Foundation of Henderson County. To date, the organization has paid out $77.5 million in grants and annuities. Nonprofits submitted grant applications in February 2022 and a volunteer committee of community members carefully and thoughtfully reviewed nearly 60 applications choosing nine grantees for the 40th Anniversary awards. Community Foundation of Henderson County will be presenting the remaining awards throughout the year at community events the organization is supporting.
