The Duke Endowment Awards $9 Million in Grants

12/15/2017

Dec. 15, 2017 – Trustees of The Duke Endowment in Charlotte have approved nearly $9 million in new grants to support organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina that are working to expand opportunities for vulnerable children.

The Duke Endowment is one of the largest private foundations in the Southeast. Its work in North Carolina and South Carolina focuses on four program areas: Child Care, Health Care, Higher Education and rural United Methodist churches.

The 14 grants approved at the Trustees’ December meeting came through the Child Care program area. They include:

  • $240,000 to Durham County Cooperative Extension in Durham, N.C., to expand the Incredible Years program in Durham County.

  • $100,000 to South Carolina Department of Social Services in Columbia, S.C., to implement an evidence-informed foster parent skill-building model.

  • $83,000 to Children and Family Resource Center in Hendersonville, N.C., to implement Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.

The Duke Endowment’s Child Care program area works through accredited organizations and other select nonprofit groups in the Carolinas to help children who are without the benefit of family support – or are at risk of losing such support – reach developmental milestones and prepare for successful transitions to adulthood. Funding supports early intervention, collaborative approaches, and projects that help organizations serve children and their families more effectively. The Endowment focuses on advancing evidence-based, nationally recognized practices that promote child well-being.

The Duke Endowment has distributed more than $3.6 billion in grants since its inception in 1924. The foundation shares a name with Duke University and Duke Energy, but they are separate organizations.
