Grants totaling $286,800 from the Emergency and Disaster Response Fund Distributed

(March 25, 2020) The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina announced 38 grants totaling $286,800 from its Emergency and Disaster Response Fund to nonprofits addressing COVID-19 pandemic response and relief efforts in 18 counties of Western North Carolina including the Qualla Boundary.

An Update from United Way of Forsyth County and The Winston-Salem Foundation on the COVID-19 Response Fund for Forsyth County

With the cases of COVID-19 increasing across our state, and the images we are seeing from other countries, concerns about the potential impacts to North Carolina are high. At the same time, with so much information circulating, people can feel overwhelmed without a clear sense of how to best fight this pandemic. We have been fortunate in our state to have the leadership of Governor Roy Cooper, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen, and our State Health Director Dr. Betsey Tilson who have acted decisively to help protect our citizens during these challenging times.

In a recent opinion in The Chronicle of Philanthropy (How to Help the Most Vulnerable Through the Pandemic, 3/11/2020), FSG’s Lauren A. Smith made an important point about a focus on equity in philanthropy’s response to the coronavirus. She encourages funders to pay specific attention to communities that are likely to suffer disproportionately during the coronavirus pandemic because of “historic, systemic barriers that have left them vulnerable.”
