Cherokee Preservation Foundation announces Spring Grants for 2023

Cherokee, N.C. – This spring, the Cherokee Preservation Foundation awarded 11 spring grants to partners within western North Carolina and beyond. Grants totaled more than $1.9 million and were awarded to projects advancing the Foundation’s mission of improving the quality of life for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and neighboring communities.

N.C. Zoological Society Awarded $2 Million Gift from SECU Foundation for Asia Habitat Addition

The world’s largest natural habitat zoological park, the North Carolina Zoo, will soon undergo an expansion and the addition of a new Asia habitat complex with the help of a $2 million gift from the member-funded SECU Foundation.

eHub initiative opens door to HBCU entrepreneurs

Johnson C. Smith University is opening opportunities – and space – for student entrepreneurs.  

The school debuted its eHub, an incubator that gives student entrepreneurs dedicated space to develop and launch new businesses. In addition to incubator space, the eHub, funded by PNC Foundation and located at James B. Duke Memorial Library, will provide select students with fellowships and access to technology, seed funding and mentorship.  

The eHub is funded by a $375,000 grant from PNC Foundation, which was announced last year as part of the PNC North Carolina HBCU Initiative.

NC Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service Recognizes Henderson County’s Outstanding Volunteers

Hendersonville, N.C., April 21, 2023 – The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service has presented the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award to seven recipients from Henderson County, and the state’s highest volunteer recognition, the Governor's Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, to the late Rick Merrill of Flat Rock.

North Carolina Community Foundation elects Kack Harrison Hardin as new board chair; William Brody joins board

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Board of Directors of the North Carolina Community Foundation has elected Katharine “Kack” Harrison Hardin as its 10th chair. Hardin succeeds Steven W. Wangerin who served as chair since 2021. A member of the board since 2014, Hardin previously served as Vice Chair/Treasurer and Finance Chair.

Golden LEAF to launch Community-Based Grants Initiative in Piedmont-Triad Prosperity Zone

The Piedmont-Triad Prosperity Zone has a unique opportunity this fall to leverage an available $11 million to be awarded by the Golden LEAF Foundation for projects that will boost job creation and economic investment, workforce preparedness, and agriculture. The Community-Based Grants Initiative (CBGI) targets one Prosperity Zone per year and is designed to advance local projects ready for implementation.
